Jules Hogan handcrafted British knitwear
Jules Hogan is an evolving timeless collection of fashion and home accessories. I am a knitwear designer for people who like to make a quiet statement.
My story
Over the past 20 years I have gained invaluable experience working in the design industry, selling designs both nationally and internationally to fashion houses and retail companies. This and having worked on trend forecasting projects gives me an understanding of the current and the future in design.
Graduating from The Winchester School of Art with a BA Honours 1st Class Degree in 1995, the collection won the universities Colour Award and The Graduate Fashion Week Knitwear Award. This collection was also exhibited with Texprint in London and Dusseldorf.
Dyeing
My love of dyeing began many years ago while studying at the Winchester School of Art, this interest has developed into extracting colour from natural plant matter and extracts. The shades take many days to develop, dipping and allowing the fabric to rest to achieve the desired colour. Browse my collection of naturally dyed alpaca socks here
The tones are very subtle and have tried to represent the tones as accurately as possible though this is very difficult on screen.
The Alpaca socks are sourced from a UK hosiery, they are mordanted, dyed, allowed to rest, sometimes re-dipped, washed, dried and finished by hand. Natural dyes continue to live, they can alter or fade in time but with care the colour will last. (Please see care instructions below).
My inspirations
My garden studio and creative haven is based in Berkshire near to countryside and open fields. I am inspired by this landscape but also drawn to tradition, sea views, striping and re-worked Fair Isle patterning , updating them with the use of colour.
With an attention to detail the fabric for many pieces is produced on re-conditioned, knitting machines. It is then pressed, carefully washed to slightly felt, dried, pressed again and then sewn to make each individual item resulting in a premium hand-finished product.
I have a commitment to quality and that the finest materials are used including super soft lambs wool sourced from a family mill that has been spinning yarn since 1766.
