Discover Camilla Thomas textiles – beautiful throws, cushions and fabrics designed and made in the British Isles
‘Tidal Sands’ is my first woven collection. The designs are evocative of the light, movement and structures found only by the coast, and particularly on the beautiful island of Anglesey in North Wales, from where I draw all my inspiration. I aim to capture the essence of what it feels like to be there in the fibres of my woven textile pieces.
I graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University in the summer of 2015, at the age of…..quite a lot really! I had always enjoyed being creative with anything textiles based; stitching in my childhood, freehand knitting in my teens, and a myriad of sewing, stitching and making projects throughout my adult life. It was only when I took the decision to turn my hobby into my working practise that I realised I had to narrow things down, focus on one discipline and find my medium.
It was there at university that I was introduced to weaving. The realisation that I was actually making a fabric from the starting point of yarn and a loom was intoxicating. So many types of yarn, so many ways in which to raise and lower the shafts to form a structure, it was totally immersing. The weaving process itself is intricate and slow and, even after careful planning, there is an element of experimentation so the results can often be surprising and the mathematical process of weave design is challenging enough to know that I could never exhaust the possibilities. I use a hand operated loom and I appreciate the physical connection of each lift of a shaft and the action serves as a constant reminder of the historic routes of this craft.I believe that, by simply living with textiles in our homes, we invest something of ourselves in to the very fibres of the fabric. Blankets and throws, wrapped around in times of tranquillity and reflection, give us comfort and a sense of well-being and therefore become more important to us and less disposable. I use natural fibres, particularly Merino Lambswool, to give luxurious softness, warmth and lightness of weight, giving the pieces value for use today and as keepsakes for the future.
Camilla Thomas cushions
Made by hand in our studio in Cheshire, all cushions are delivered with a feather filled interior pad. Made from our range of fabrics with contrasting plain felted wool backs, our cushion covers are all 100% wool. Most designs are made to order and can be produced fairly quickly, usually within a week. If you would like a different size, or backing colour, then please email with your enquiry.
Camilla Thomas throws
My first collection of throws is called ‘tidal sands’. Soft, warm and lightweight, these beautiful throws come in subtle shades, reminiscent of pebble beaches, pale skies and blue seas. Designed on the island of Anglesey in North Wales and manufactured in small batches by a family run mill in Lancashire.
Camilla Thomas fabrics
This beautiful woven wool fabric has been manufactured for me on a short run at a mill in Lancashire. It has a soft handle, drapes nicely and is suitable for soft furnishings. The colours are all inspired by the stones found on the pebble beach at Penmon Point on Anglesey. All four colour ways are available to purchase by the metre, but we would recommend ordering a swatch pack first to check the colours. (Colours change on screen and the fabric is made from marled yarns, so there is some ‘movement’ in the colours of each design.)
