Creative business idea number 10: sometimes forget the plan and seize the moment: creative business collaboration
Over the last 10 days or so I have shared 10 of my key pieces of advice for making a living from doing what you love. I’ve covered web design, photography, social media, Pinterest, marketing, finance, online tools & apps and the power of planning. All full of ideas and tips based on personal experience and expert know-how.
The previous post was all about the power of planning and the To Do List. I do love to tick things off my own list. Without it I would feel swamped by chaos and an endless workload. I tick things off and feel good about making progress and moving towards targets and goals.
Having said all of that, I do think that you sometimes have to grab an opportunity when it comes your way – whether or not it’s on the plan, or even particularly convenient.
Creative business collaboration
Part of being creative is being open to ideas and inspiration that seemingly come from nowhere. Follow a spark of something. Make contact with someone that resonates with you at a particular moment and let the journey unfold. I made contact with Philippa Stanton (AKA 5ftinf) on a whim because I was drawn to her and instinctively wanted to know more. No doubt I was supposed to be doing something else, but I followed a whim instead. There was no plan behind our meeting a month or so later. No strategy. But at the end of our day together I left buzzing with creativity and excited about plans to collaborate.
Some of my best collaborations happened by chance and were definitely not on the plan. For me, it’s this part of running your own business that is the most fun. Being able to say yes to something that you know is right, without having to ask anyone’s permission is just the best. After all, you’re the boss, so the decision is yours. How great is that?
