Patchwork quilt patterns – 10 free downloads by Tilda
I know it’s midsummer right now, so it might seem a bit daft to get stuck into quilting as the sun’s splitting the flags. But, if you’re anything like me, this is the sort of project that you’ll need to allow plenty of time for. You might well not be like me at all – and perfectly able to whip up one of these beautiful quilts in a matter of days. In which case, by all means save the idea for later in the year and enjoy then!
For those of us that like to take our time with creative projects (and tend to lose our way slightly) I’m thinking that now is the perfect time to make a start. Choose the pattern, pick out your fabric combinations and begin to cut out and sew. Choosing the pattern will take time – that’s before I (we?) even begin to think about fabric combinations.
As far as choosing the right pattern is concerned, I don’t think you can go far wrong with Tilda – pretty designs with gorgeous collections of fabrics to choose from.
I’ve gone through the masses of lovely free patchwork quilt patterns on Tildas World and picked out my top 10 favourites. That bit alone took me ages – it’s so hard to choose. Hope you like my selection!

Free patchwork quilt patterns
Daydreamer quilt from the Pie in the Sky collection
Such a pretty design, made using one block in three different colourways with the block rows separated by sashing. The fabrics are from the Pie in the Sky, Solid and Sophie collections by Tilda.

Homestar quilt from the Hometown collection
There’s a country vibe to this design and I love the use of red. The quilt is inspired by tiles used to create decorative Victorian floors and uses an eight-point star block in two colourways, surrounded by sashing made up of squares and triangles on point. The Solid country red colour is the perfect foil to the lovely print fabrics of the Hometown range.
Henhouse free patchwork quilt pattern
This quilt design is just so charming and I love the Tilda girl tending to her hens. The quilt has two different blocks that alternate – the girl herself plus a henhouse – with sashing used to separate the rows of blocks. The blocks are made up of many parts, but the detailed diagrams provided make them straightforward to sew.

How stunning is this spectacular design from the latest Tilda collection? It’s made using fabrics from the new Solids fabric collection and reminiscent of floral needlepoint embroideries, recreated here using a subtle mixture of solid fabrics on a dark peacock background. The design is made up of just squares in a single size, so there’s lots of easy cutting and sewing, although for the best result you do have to match up seams neatly when sewing the patches together.
For the background, individual squares are used throughout rather than strips, to continue the appearance of an embroidery. Difficulty rating is Easy, so why not get cracking? It’s something sure to be loved for decades to come, don’t you think?

Colour Speckles patchwork quilt
Also given a difficulty rating of easy, this striking modern design is composed of four asymmetrical blocks, made in different colourways and contrasted with a warm sand background (though it would be easy to change the colours to your own choice.

Flower Wreath patchwork quilt

This beautiful quilt on a floral theme is easy to make, using simple techniques and one basic block. I really like the classic circular wreath design and the combination of plain background and pretty floral fabrics. The coral background (above) works well, but so does yellow (below)… I told you it might take some time to choose your pattern and fabrics!

Easy Lazy Gardener’s patchwork quilt
I had to include this pattern as it’s so easy to make – perfect for beginners or if you want quick results!
It is created using simple half-square triangle blocks are arranged to form diagonal patterns across the quilt.

I love this pattern – feels like something out of Anne of Green Gables or The Waltons… It’s from an early collection, which it’s not easy to find the fabric for any more, but it would be easy to substitute your own.
