Flatlay photography workshop with @5ftinf – colour collecting and domestic foraging with artist Philippa Stanton.
I doubt it comes as much of a surprise to anyone that I am a huge fan of artist Philippa Stanton (aka @5ftinf on Instagram). So, when the stresses and strains of lockdown began to hit home, and I wanted to think of ways to help bring our creative community together, I naturally thought of her. We shared a bowl of soup and (always lengthy) chat over Zoom. We agreed that we both really wanted to give something beneficial and inspirational to our collective communities. Something that might help bring our people together. So, we decided to co-host a free live webinar on Zoom. Philippa is the queen of colour collecting and creative flatlay photography, so that’s what we chose to do: Domestic Foraging and Colour Collecting.
We agreed on a date and I sent out an email to my newsletter subscribers. I planned to send out a series of emails until all places had been filled. That’s not quite what happened…! Within an hour or two of sending out the first email, all the places had been filled. The live workshop (which happened earlier today ) was every bit as wonderful and inspiring as I’d hoped. And, judging by the masses of thank you emails I’ve received since then, it was really enjoyed by everyone there.
Philippa shared her thoughts and ideas on how we can all reconnect with the innate creativity within us, as well as a totally wonderful live colour-themed flatlay demo. Using pink, red and white objects, she created an ombre still-life flatlay (see below). Highlights for me: how prawn crackers look before they’re cooked, they way garlic and giant Himalayan rock salt crystals match… and that Philippa went back in after the webinar because she simply HAD to add that daisy.
Here’s Philippa’s Insta post following the webinar.
The recording of the webinar has now expired but why not enjoy losing yourself for a few moments in this Sensory Collecting video by Philippa which links beautifully to the domestic foraging idea behind the webinar.
